Police are investigating after more than 70 animals — many of them undomesticated — were found dead at a home in Old Saybrook.

The animals were removed Wednesday from a home on River Street, according to Michael A. Spera, chief of the Old Saybrook Police Department.

Spera said the animals included rabbits, chickens, a duck, a skunk, a dove and two cats. No live animals were in the home.

According to Spera, no one was residing in the home at the time.

“The Old Saybrook Police Department will ensure that a comprehensive criminal investigation into this disturbing matter will be conducted,” Spera said in a statement. “We have no tolerance for the mistreatment of animals and will work with the court to hold those responsible accountable.”

Robin “Zilla” Cannamela, president and co-founder of Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates, told The Courant the situation involved animal hoarding and speculated whether the former resident was trying to rehabilitate wildlife. She said she found it very unusual that so many undomesticated animals were in a home.

Cases involving animal hoarding usually involve cats and dogs, she said.

“It’s just bizarre,” Cannamela said. “The majority of these were wild animals.”
