‘Extremely malnourished, emaciated’ dog found dead in CT cemetery

Hartford Courant | October 3, 2024 | By JUSTIN MUSZYNSKI |

An animal rights group is offering $5,000 in exchange for information after an emaciated dog was found dead in a cemetery in Naugatuck last week.

The animal was found shortly before 10 a.m. last Friday by the caretaker at Hillside Cemetery on High Street, according to Naugatuck Animal Control.

The gray and white Staffordshire Terrier was described as “extremely malnourished and emaciated” and is believed to have died in the overnight hours, animal control said. Animal control officers are not sure how old the dog was. They said its size indicates it was between 6 and 8 months old, but the dog’s teeth would suggest it was between 2 to 6 years old.

Authorities “cannot correctly confirm an accurate age due to the severity of the dog’s health conditions,” Naugatuck Animal Control said.

Detectives with the Naugatuck Police Department responded and treated the area as a crime scene “based on the dog’s extremely poor condition and overall circumstances,” according to Naugatuck Animal Control.

Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates have offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. The reward will be rescinded in 90 days.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Naugatuck Animal Control at 203-729-4324 or NaugatuckAnimalControl@gmail.com. Information can also be left at their confidential tip line at 203-720-1010.
