NEW HAVEN, CT. (WFSB) - The New Haven Animal Shelter is investigating why a dog was left starved and abandoned at a city park.

It’s the latest in what’s been a series of dogs being abandoned and other animal cruelty cases across the state.

The New Haven Animal Shelter posted a photo on Facebook of an emaciated and sad mixed-breed dog tied up to a bench at Edgewood Park.

Zilla Cannamella is the president of the animal rights group Desmond’s Army. She says this case is the latest of more than 70 animal cruelty cases this month.

“That includes the hoarding cases, the violent crimes, the cross-over domestic violence crimes with animals,” Cannamella said.

Just over a week ago, another dog was abandoned outside a home on Smith Drive in East Hartford. Animal control says she was barely clinging to life and had to be euthanized.

Cannamella says part of the issue is an overgrowing pet population coming from out of state that’s crowding local shelters.

“We import dogs by the thousands a year from the south when we have our own crisis right here at home. Connecticut dogs need to be adopted by Connecticut rescues and Connecticut pounds,” Cannamella said.

She’s reminding owners who can no longer take care of their dogs to call their local shelters and to be patient with the process.

“It may take a while, you may have to be on a waiting list, you’ll have to be patient but do not wait until the 11th hour,” said Cannamella.

Desmond’s Army is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest of the person responsible for abandoning the dog in New Haven.

If you recognize the dog or have any other information, please contact the New Haven Animal Shelter at 203-946-8110.

Let the punishment fit the crime.

The person responsible for starving and abandoning this dog should be taken to a remote location and left tied up without food or water, rather than being arrested.
